While working Seed Survivor in the Ag-tivity in the City tent, I wanted to make friends with a farmer and feed a calf by a bottle and play with piglets.  Somehow, I met a nice pig farmer named Shawn, who is also a City of Calgary Police Officer!  His family is also very nice, and his girls come play and help out at our booth.

Wish they would stay this tiny!

Anyways...to make a long story short, this morning I got to play with the piglets before we opened.  So fun!  I can't wait to play with them more.  They are so soft.  These little guys were 7 days old today, but when they are first born they are the size of a water bottle.  And I was told today by Kaylee (pig farmers oldest daughter) that the pigs are ready for market when they are 5.5 months old.  And we thought our bean plants grew big! 

I want to keep you!

Here's a fun fact for you.  Male pigs can get up to 1000 pounds!  That's one large pig.

The Anti-Climatic Royal Sighting

I got up at 5:50 AM Friday morning to get down to the parade route for my attempt to see Will and Kate before I had to go to work on the grounds.

Although I did get to see them fly by in their motorcade, I was disappointed they weren't in a carriage, or in a classic convertible.

I somehow managed to get a decent picture out of it though.  Not sure how.  At first the picture looks like no big deal....but a little zooming in, and I discovered I have Kate smiling and a decent profile of Will!  :)

Summer Fun Time!

Changed the title of my Blog since this won't be really used as an agenda anymore.  Will try to write things as they happen.

St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana

Got back from Glacier National Park yesterday.  Had a fun time camping!  A nice way to unwind and get into the swing of summer vacation.  Although, it would have been nice if the truck from Illinois hadn't backed into my car...time to call insurance.

Schools Out For Summer!

No more pencils!
No more books!
No more teachers dirty looks!


Report cards go home today.

Costume suggestions:


Boys: bib overalls, cotton or flannel button up shirts, felt hats or caps, boots, suspenders (could be made from rope), jeans or cord pants.


Girls: cotton dresses or skirts and blouses, aprons, black or white tights, a large hair bow or bonnet, petticoats, shawl, dark colored dress boots or shoes


Long hair should be braided.

Science test on Plants tomorrow


Lunchroom Registration Sheet to be mailed in or brought to office.

Baking Powder Biscuits

Ingredients:
1/3 cup shortening
1 3/4 cup flour
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoons salt
3/4 cup milk


Directions:
1. Heat oven to 450 degrees Celsius.
2. Cut shortening into flour, baking powder, and salt with pastry blender or 2 knives. Stir in milk. Turn dough onto lightly floured board.  Knead 10 times.
3. Roll to 1/2 inch thick.  Cut with 2 inch biscuit cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
4. Bake 10 to  12 minutes.


*Makes about 1 dozen biscuits.

Homemade Butter

Ingredients:
1 empty quart jar with tight-fitting lid
1 pint heavy whipping cream
A pinch of salt (optional)

Directions:
1. Pour cream into jar, leaving a space at the top to allow for shaking.
2. Shake jar until chunks of butter start to form (about 15 minutes).
3. Pour chucks and liquid into a strainer which has been placed over a bowl.
4. Sprinkle butter chunks with salt, if desired.

Book Count Challenge Update

I just finished another book.  This one was shorter.  It's called Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom.  He's written a number of books, and I've read most of them.  The next book I'm going to read seems pretty big.  It's really thick!  Not sure if I'll have it finished by Monday or not, but we'll see.

I know I was MIA (missing in action) for a couple of days....I was busy walking up and down massive hills in Seattle exploring what their city had to offer.

All that being said, you can add another book to the list!  I just finished Hoot. All 292 pages of it. It's a good one.  I'm excited to read it in class with you!

So, I just finished reading my second book!  Secret Daughter.  So good!  Although, like you guys with not liking the ending to Bridge to Terabithia, I really didn't like how this book ended.  It just ended! Oh...and the book was 342 pages long.  Just saying.

Building Devices and Vehicles that Move -- Spring Break Project

Dear Parents,

As part of our Science unit on Building Devices and Vehicles that Move, students are being asked to construct a model of a moving device at home.  They have selected a blueprint, (instruction sheet,) of their choice, and these can also be found on D2L.  This should only be made out of recycled materials so that there is no cost.  Pre-made wheels and axles from toy cars, etc. should not be used.  For example, if making a car, it can be as simple as using a juice box, wrapping it with paper, and making a design on it.  Then, students could use a straw and milk jug lids as the wheels and axles.  These are small models that should be no bigger than a shoebox.  All models should be decorated as well.

They will be bringing their models back to school on April 11^th, 2011, after Spring Break to share with the class.  Have fun completing the project together!  We look forward to comparing our designs when we get back.
